What difference will it make to travertine if I seal them after they have been grouted?

Is there a good and a bad way to seal travertine? Do's and dont's?

I have had a travertine floor laid in a kitchen. The tiler hasn't sealed them saying I can do it which I am not really comfortable about. I don't think it is a difficult job but I have read that they should have been sealed before grouting and then again after.

I know tilers all have their personal favourite products to use and I cant believe the price of the stuff but it has to be done otherwise I realise they will stain. I am going to use Fila from Topps Tiles. Good-bad?

the reason you seal them before grouting is to stop water and grout marking them. if you dont then at best you'll have to wait for them to dry out before sealing, and at worst you'll stain them.

its not worth the hassle.

Fila is ok but you'll find it cheaper than topps, personally i prefer lithofin as they have an excellent tech advice line.

Seems strange that your tiler is passing the sealing off to you - perhaps the after grout coat but not he pre-grout one.

One other thing, if its light travertine (or any for my money) you MUST use a white adhesive

tpt. Thanks for the reply

Somehow I am not convinced that I got a good job done. He said he thought they were pre sealed and that I could seal them rather than him. They aren't sealed to my knowledge and they have had cardboard down since to stop them getting stained.

Also the grout is not white but the same colour as the travertine. What difference does that make? Is it personal preference/cosmetic?

Dont know whether the grout has marked them but there is spots of grout in places.

What do you mean by "Fila is ok but you'll find it cheaper than topps,"

Are you saying I should shop around for it elsewhere?

grout colour is personal preference.

if its already been grouted then its a bit of a moot point. grout will fill some of the pits in trav, if theres no staining you may be ok.

yep, shop around.

You should have sealed them first use hg sealer its the best by far and the tiler should have told you to seal them two weeks later then every four months

what you have to seal them for the life of the floor??

The tiler doesn't want the responsibility of them staining with foot traffic - if you seal them - it's your problem. I don't think they are suitable for floors personally.

depends an awful lot on the quality of the stone. some of the cheap soft stuff gives lots of issues. good quality stuff sealed with something like lithofin mn stainstop will only need sealing every 2-3 years
