So, my entire 40m2 patio was lifted today and given away FOC ( such a nice guy)

There is net work of roots from weeds which i have started removing.

my new plan for a garden involved NO weeds.

Whats my best option for ensuring that nothing grows on the land again.

my brain tells me to go see the local farmer and get some decent weedkiller. i'd be happy if nothing ever grew on this peice of land again very prone to weeds. i've heard stories of people using kerosene, petrol derv etc, but that can't be great for mother earth.

any suggestions welcome. i'm removing as much as i can in the mean time, and will flame throw the entire area before i do anything.

It depends on what you want to do with the area afterwards?

Weedkiller will not kill roots as there is no leaf area to absorb the weedkiller, you could put a barrier type weedkiller down like pathclear but they are more expensive and will only last a few months. Really its hard work but best to rake them out.

ill be bedding in a rectangle of 100mmx100m granite cobs spaced 110cm from my fence ( garden is 7mx5m). inside the rectangle will be high grade fake grass on a bed of compated whinstone grit, outside will be either pebbles or cotsolds buff 20mm.

only thing that gets me is if i cover the entire area with a weed membrane, do i bed the mortor for the cobs ontop of the membrane ?

only super weeds like japanese knotweed and marestail will make it through a few inches of compacted hardcore so no need to worry about a membrane under the artifical grass. and frankly a membrane will not stop either of those nasty bastards.

If your membrane is a geotextile for ground stabalisation then lay it under the type 1 if its just to keep the weeds down then lay it on the top of the hardcore directly under the gravel.

As for the cobbles you can lay them on top of the membrane but then it will be really deep relative to the final finished surface which is not ideal especially under decorative gravel

Personally i would just lay the cobbles then the membrane cut to fit inside them
