I am having a problem which I was hoping someone could advice me on. I live in a John Lawrence house in Glasgow (1957). We bought the house in 2005 at which point it was the traditional brown roughcast on the outside. We had it painted white professionally and since then the paint has been flaking off every two years. A couple of years ago we got cavity wall insulation done (don’t know if it’s just coincidence or related) and over the last 6-9 months I have noticed that the roughcast has been coming off in places and the paint has been peeking off and cracking more. We had one of the walls painted in 2010 again (after the cavity wall insulation). Last week I removed the flaking paint and pressure washed the walls so that I could paint again. What I did notice is that in some areas the render looks a bit damp while in other areas it looks dry. Why is that. Also some have suggested that I may have to take the roughcast off to the bare brick and re-roughcast, which is way too expensive. Some tradesmen advise that putting a good sealant should do the trick. We have put sealants in the past and that has not solved the problem so will it this time. Can anyone advise please what might be the best way forward. In some places when I tap the roughcast I can feel that its hollow behind it – does that mean it needs to be removed and re-rendered. Please help!
