I have a Tesco "Hoover" and its the best. Works on my small bit of carpet, the wooden floors and on jobs. Now 7 years old and never missed a beat. Fair enough you need to empty the bag, so what.
Why do Dyson hoovers cost so much?

It was a replacement for a Henry.
I always used a Henry at work and thought they were great so bought one for home and told the missus how good it was.
I was wrong.
Honestly, if you are using a Henry to vac your carpets you are walking on a carpet of dirt.
Have you tried a Dyson Animal?
I have to admit there are an awful lot of good reviews on Dysons both on Amazon and other sites. And most of these reviews seem very impartial. I can't imagine Dyson creating fake accounts on Amazon to post positive reviews, especially given most Amazon reviews are based on purchases.
Anyway, like you say, lot of reviews mention the amount of dirt the Dysons pickup and seem to give the carpets a real working over and pick up a lot of dirt, even the stuff resting inside the carpet someway below the surface.

I can never understand what makes normally rational people pay 300 notes for a fookin vacuum cleaner.
We have never owned a Dyson, but on the rare occasion that I have used one, two things occurred to me;
Firstly, they're so user-unfriendly. I couldn't see a switch on it to turn on, couldn't figure out how to make the handle/body unlatch so that it pivoted with the base for hoovering, etc, etc, etc. Everything was an overcomplicated balls-ache. Had to ask the owner how to use it.
Secondly, the thing weighed a ton. OK for me, but as it's 'er indoors' domain, not so great for going up stairs. What do divvy Dyson buyers with too much money do about this? Have one for upstairs, one for downstairs?
We've got an Electrolux upright with a cyclonic thingamyjig that cost £60 from Makro 12 years ago. Still sucks like a good 'un. Don't think our carpets would be 6 times cleaner if we lashed out on a Dyson.

Was that your philosophy when you met your missus?!forgot to say, they look much better than the henry, its a shame they do not work as well, but who cares what they look like if they suck well

I did. Kev has one. It looked like a wet/dry vac I used to have...except this one had a "face" on it...little perky smiling face
He said he'd had it for more than 15 years. It sucked up better than the one I have here (hoover) that's about 2 years old.

Its not a question of getting it x times cleaner, but what's important is that you should feel you have done a 'thorough' job at cleaning the carpets and upholstry.

after reading newfireplace other posts i think the Dyson is for him if he fits a magnet to the hose it will work even better
