Wiring in master phone socket?

Okay so this is a nightmare, sorry for the anger in this post, I'm not normally so wound up.

It's taken 3 freaking weeks for my internet to get activated (I need internet for my job), after waiting 5 weeks for BT to activate my phoneline.

Finally I get the text and expect to arrive home for my internet to be working and ready, except it's not. I restart everything, change the microfilters, all the normal stuff but still no luck so I ring PlusNet.

PlusNet tell me to do the checks I've already done, minus opening the master socket to use the test Socket.. So I tried that and still no luck. Problem is, not so long ago one of my family members who's helping with moving in ripped the extension wire out of the Master Socket (the wire lead to an extension upstairs), and I'm pretty sure in doing this he damaged the box somehow. I looked at the wiring inside, and a couple of wires seem to be leading nowhere, and I have no idea where to go from here.

I'm not paying PlusNet to come fix it, considering they've been so very helpful so far, I'd rather just do it myself.

If anyone has any idea how the wiring works inside a master socket, please let me know.

Bear in mind I'm an absolute beginner with wiring, although now's a good a time as any to learn?

It's pretty normal for there to be disconnected wires inside a master phone socket.

Can you identify which cable is the incoming line from BT?
How is it connected to the master socket?
Are there any other wires connected to the master socket?
How exactly are you connecting your phone and broadband equipment to the master socket?

My strong suspision though is that this is a problem on the BT side.

I'll have a check tomorrow, I'm fairly tired and I wouldn't do it any justice haha.

There shouldn't be, they only activated the landline last week, and although I wasn't there, surely that was something they'd check for?

If it's a fairly modern installation, then for a regular single residential line you'll find the orange & white from the black drop wire connected to the terminals in the master jack. If you plug a phone into the test jack and it works and shows the correct number (dial 17070 to check), then you should be able to get your DSL modem to connect. If not, then it's most likely not been provisioned properly on the line.

sorry but you cannot do or touch anything to do with your bt master socket.get your line provider to see to it.you touch it and it will cost much more as you are not allowed.anything this side of master socket you can play about with.dont do it get them out cos it also may be the drop link the line in anything

and they will deffo know if you played about with their side and the costs will be much more
