No, I've read it four times and I'm still not sure exactly what you're asking, can you re-phrase the question please.

Sorry for the obviously vague question. By saying off the bead, I mean that the floor is not level in any obvious part. It is a old stone floored house and there are lots of runs on the floor which means that pretty much most of the tiles are wobbling. There are 1000mm base units in the kitchen which have four adjustable legs to level so that the worktop sits level. There is a plinth or long piece of matching wood which is to go against the carcases of these base units at floor level so as to hide the legs etc. I was wanting to put the tiles just under this plinth so as to be neater and then just scribe the plinth to fit. However I am not sure how to get the floor level so that it will make the job of laying the tiles that much more easier. I wondered if I could do some kind of shuttering job with battens of wood affixed to the floor and cut to the right height on four sides of the floor so that I create my own even level and a self levelling compound to then provide a level surface to then affix the floor tiles. Hope this makes sense-lol

Yup that makes sense.

And I see nothing wrong with your reasoning, the only governing factor will how thick the screed needs to be, it's this thickness that will dictate the most suitable product.

Mudster thanks for the info. At most the difference is probably close to a couple of inches. What products are available and what has say the best coverage, drying time and is easy to work with since newbie? Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Most self levelling screeds will only deal with 5-10mm. some up to 25mm with granite bulking.

50mm you really need a sand/cement screed, but this doesn't really like going less than 50mm.

Seeing as the floor will be tiled I'd be tempted to use a self leveller and build it in layers, but it needs to be a good quality one like Ardex K15B (which is desinged to go to 35mm and then a top coat with Ardex K15.

Available from good tiling distributors.

Try Ardex.co.uk for your local distributor, their technical helpline is also very informative.

Mudster thanks very much for the time and the information-much appreciated. I will give it a go!
