Why does everything break down on a Friday at 4.00pm!!!

Boiler continues to function even if the timer says it must be off. Changed the timer and no difference. Boiler does switch off when mains power is switched off. Think we had similar problems a while back and will look through the forum and see if any answers there but in the meantime can anyone point me in the direction of a good process of fault finding to at least ascertain what is wrong.

Thermostat or valve?

Any way of diagnosing what is wrong. Reasonably capable DIYer but coloured blind so if I need to cut the red wire I get the wife to show me the red wire!

Any help gratefully appreciated.

If you have motorised valves check them.
Boiler only has a switched live so definately not the boiler.

Looked at "motorised valves" on Ebay and it all came flooding back to me....not literally thankfully. Replaced the motor in the valve a few years back. Many thanks for the prompt and helpful response. Will head to B&Q and see if I can pick up a motor or new valve. Can't remember whether it is doable to replace the complete valve without draining the system.

Thanks again....will report back if I get it fixed...or not!!

Two motorised valves in system..one for hot water and one for central heating it looks like. Both, at first glance, seem to function when the hot water and then the central heating are initiated from the timer. Each valve moves and electronically trips when requested. Could it be that the valves are actually stuck open, or closed, and the motor is just running but not actually doing anything? Pretty sure the last time one of the motors died and replacing that sorted it. Will take each motor away from the unit and see what's what but any other ideas?

Yes.......

Both valves open and close on demand as requested. Just using the advance heating and hot water option on timer and will try the timed options on the timer to see if maybe that is what is faulty.

Any other suggestions welcome.

it sounds to me that one of the end switches is staying on when it shouldnt. you need to isolate supply at mains, discon one of the grey wires in wiring centre and make it safe, then try turning system on and off to see what happens - I'd try HW valve first. then report back.

Looked at HW valve and it seems to operate correctly. CH valve seems to only partially open/close on some occasions. Suspect electrical signal is getting to the valve but the mechanical part of the valve is not responding correctly in the sense that it is not fully opening or closing as and when required. Watching the manual lever when the valve is activated via the timer (timed option) it seems that it does not move to it's fullest extent when either opening or closing.

On further investigation when the timer initiates hot water the hot water motorised valve opens and boiler is triggered. Howvere, the radiators also gets warm so this leads me to suspect that the CH motorised valve is stuck open. Can someone confirm that diagnosis for me? Many thanks.
