Hi, if I have some timber (150mm x 47mm x 3 meters long), and I intend to fix it between two 75mmx75mm posts. Will I need to install a centre post? This is basically the open end of a lean to that I intend to build.

If I understand your vague description correctly then no centre post required.

Thanks for the reply foxhole.

Maybe my quick (not to scale!) sketch will help clarify.

I also have no idea whether brackets are availble to fix all this together i.e. like some form of joist hangers or something, or just screw the wood together.

I'm also not sure at the open end which way is best to fix the rails so that they over hang - probably do a a heal / seat cut from what I have read.

notch out top of posts say20mm deep long enough to take your 6x2 and bolt toghter

or you could bolt the beam to the face of the posts which you might find easier, and will not expose any cut ends that may be prone to rot.

If I bolted the two end rails to the face of the posts unless I then cut the tops of the posts in line with the pitch of the rails then I would end up a straight lip at the open end......

yes, the rafters!! sorry, wrong terminology, was just using the name given to the timber by the supplier I intend to purchase from........

ok, thanks for the input so far. Will look into the timberlock screws.

Can someone recommend a method of connecting the fafters to the end posts and horizonatal timber? At the moment in order to provide a bit of an overhang is to use a birdmouth cut??
