Hello everyone,

I'm going to be building a vanity unit for a small cloakroom toilet (only toilet and basin in the room)

It'll be made out of MR MDF but as a worktop I was going to use a 600 x 300 tile, not sure what kind of tile yet just know the size. Obviously I would never normally tile onto MDF but just for this small job would it be ok with the moisture resistant? I would use ply but thought the edges wouldn't look as good.

Does anyone have any recommendations for adhesive? I was thinking just ready mixed as its just the one tile and again, never normally use the ready mix.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks very much

Not a good idea to tile MDF, even MR is unsuitable & for a vanity unit, water & possibly even that in the tile adhesive will destroy it rather quickly.

What thickness MDF were you thinking of using? Why not tile the edge as well?

Why not buy an off cut lump of kitchen worktop & use that, you probably won’t even need to tile it.

Ready mix isn’t suitable for that size tile; it will take an age to set & may not set at all. You need a flexy powder adhesive but for just one tile, you could use silicone instead.

and again, never normally use the ready mix.
Don’t understand that bit!

Thanks for all the advice,I was going to use 18mm MR MDF but would decent ply work? It would just be for the tile to sit on?

The kitchen worktop offcut idea is definitely a lot easier and what I would normally do but I'm looking for quite a specific grey colour that the tile would have been perfect and can't seem to find the right look of worktop. I'll maybe just look about.

Thanks very much again for the advice, it's very much appreciated

I would use 18mm exterior/WBP (not standard ply), double up the thickness along the front edge & bevel the tile edges along the front corner to give a granite worktop effect but it's a lot of effort to go to for a small vanity unit.

It may also be a little too much for you as you will need a decent wet wheel cutter & bevel edge tiling takes a little practice.

Thanks for the advice, I've got a wet wheel cutter but as you said bevel cutting might be a bit tricky for me to get it perfect, great idea though

I think I'll try it with WBP

Thanks again
