how to make radiator work?

does the pin pop back up on its own when you push it down? if not try tapping the valve body

pin doesn't pop up on its own even after tapping the valve smartly several times with an adjustable hammer.

any ideas?

If the lockshield is open then the TRV is still stuck. When fully open the pin should be higher than that.

Thank you, Pete. I'm sorry to be so ignorant (!) but could you please tell me:

1) What is the lockshield?
2) How can I make sure it's fully open?
3) Is there anything I can do if the pin still won't bounce fully up after it's been fully opened?

you can try pushing it repeatedly down and letting it spring up. Sometimes that will free it. Some people use a hammer but I always worry they will knock the pin sideways and break or dislodge it.

I prefer to put a metal soupspoon in the palm of the hand and push straight down. The curve of the spoon will make the pin slide to the centre and not go sideways, and the spoon spreads the load so the pin does not puncture your hand.

If you want you can apply a couple of drips of WD40 to the pin before you start working it up and down, but it probably won't help.

hmmm, hitting the pin repeatedly with a soup spoon cupped in palm and then with a hammer hasn't freed it. Does this mean the rad'd need a new valve to work?

Am thinking of getting a plug in oil filled radiator or convector heater instead...

btw, thanks for tip about not pulling pin up. Have stopped doing that now. Hope I didn't break it when I did pull it up...

I didn't mean hit it with the spoon, I meant press it firmly down. You can watch it go down, and rise up on its spring when you reduce pressure.

If it won't move, fit a new valve.

This is much easier if there is a bit of play in the pipe to accomodate a new valve that is probably a different size from the old one. If there is just a short bit of pipe coming out of a concrete floor it is much harder.

Try some wd40 on pin leave then tap pin with a hammer or use grips and move it up and down it appear by the picture the pins stuck down.

I'm very happy to tell you that Idealman's tip of leaving WD-40 on the pin then pulling it up and down with pliers worked :) It didn't at first, but when I went back later to bash it with a hammer (what the heck, we'dbooked a plumber to replace the valve), the pin sprang back up again after I hit it (only as far as I'd been able to pull it up before) and - to my surprise - the radiator was warm to touch! Thank you everyone for your help on this. Our baby is now sound asleep in a properly warm room :)
