New Van

Hello All

Works good at the moment and I'm in need of a bigger Brand new Van or nearly new.

I am taking a risk, as we all know work might be good now but it can dry up just lke that.

We are in reccesion. Are there any bargains to be had? All these van dealers do is try to convince me its all them doing me a favour and not the other way and acting as if there is no Reccesion at all.

Any tips any one? or good advice.

Consider the auctions as lots of businesses either change their stock after 2-3 years or sadly some go bust and the vans end up at auction. I always go a few times first once you are ready to buy to get a feel for the place and also to 'spot' a few likely candidates and then do your research on them before the sale starts. I've had a few vans that way and also anything over a certain value comes with varying warranties dependant on the Auction too in case there is any major issues immediately after purchase. Go to a large reputable auction and beat the dealers because that's all they do and then they sell it to you at a healthy margin. Again, do your homework and get in a few dummy runs to get a feel for prices etc first.

You can claim the tax back on the interest on a loan for a van, if that helps.

Assuming you're not VAT registered you might be better sourcing your van from a private seller or similar for a sort of VAT inclusive price. Consider this hypothetical example...

Buy a van at £10,000 + £2,000 VAT = £12,000. This appeals to VAT registered people as they can claim the VAT back, so the van actually costs them the £10k that it's worth.

Buy the same van from someone not VAT registered and they'll sell it for a bit over the £10,000 that it's worth, say £10,500-£11,000, with no VAT. This doesn't appeal to VAT registered people as there's no VAT to claim back so it actually costs them more by paying the full price, but you end up getting it for a grand or so less than the "plus VAT" equivalent.

The same theory exists at auctions. Generally they're all plus VAT.

Thanks Alan

You could consider a contract lease. I'm not sure on the details but I think that you can claim a large percentage back against your income tax because you don't actually own the van so it's not a capital expense. Best talk to someone with some proper accounting skills to confirm this before jumping in to a loan agreement. This is not the same as hire purchase or a finance agreement. The lease lengths seem to vary between 12 months and 48 months.
What van are you looking at?
