just had a quote to hang a pair internal doors 1168mm in total
doors are oak venner new frame so will shoot straight in once i just adjust one leg, also to fit the architrave and door stops and the ironmongery
carpenter to supply hinges rebated catch and two star type shoot bolts, doors and handle and architrave and door stops supplied by me

cost £380

so £60-£80 for ironmongery.plus the kickback.
so £300 for a days work,not bad if you can get it.

but if you were to have a new consumer unit fitted the sparks would charge you a lot more then that and only be there half the time.and they will do that with a small bag of tools.

the chippy will turn up with half a workshop and some.

I love doors that shoot straight in. sounds like a really simple job to me. If I were you I'd save £380 and do it yourself. Do a few more jobs like that for some friends and family, and this time next year you'll be a millionaire.

If I'd got a thousand pounds for every door, that shot straight in (without any planing and shooting the head) I'd still be a very poor bloke. I've yet to meet a customer who's put door frames in correctly. (one even fitted his own architraves back to front c/w gaps you could drive a double decker bus sideways through) One customer even put the door frame in at 30" wide at the top and 31, 1/2" at the bottom, (and about 2" twisted to boot) then wondered why I spent the first hour sorting his bloody mess out, before even offering the door in.

im a chippy AND i know what i have spent on tools over the years and it isnt cheap.
i work with a few sparks and i know how much they charge for certain elements of there trade,like wise with the plumbers too.
and job for job i couldnt dream of charging the amounts they all charge for the type of work they do,
yes im now waiting for the same old crud of,OH BUT WE HAVE TO DO THIS AND THAT and WE HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THAT AND THIS.

i put a lot of trades people who charge extortionate amounts in the realms of solicitors,ROBBING GITS.

but hey this is my opinion.so i must be wrong eh

How much can a a mallet and chisel cost?

i work with a few sparks and i know how much they charge for certain elements of there trade,like wise with the plumbers too.

Perhaps you should take off he blindfold and learn from them?

FiremanT your being a bit rude to us carpenters and joiners which I will put down to your ignorance.

I do not know how much it costs to calibrate electrical test equipment but I do know that some domestic electrical engineers can fit all their tools, and the consumer unit, and the cable, and the back boxes, and face plates in an estate car, plus their short steps, oh, I must not forget the 6" spirit level that they don't use. I say short steps because the sparks who does my certification always borrows my long steps and my laser level where necessary.

I have trouble getting my hand tools and array of power tools, site saw, routers working platform etc etc in my long wheelbase Renault Master Van. My mobile tools are insurance valued at 9k (that's all I could afford to pay on insurance tools value) and that is without my fixed workshop tools and machines.
I would not dream of telling any tradesman his rate was too expensive, if he has invested in the tools for the job, is qualified, gets what work he wants at the rate he wants, gets follow on work, good for him.

I see no reason why I should earn less than the sparks (or any other trade) working out of the back of their estate car.

As for the original post, get more quotes, but get a much cheaper quote may mean having to buy new doors when the cowboy chops the hinges on the wrong side of a door and walks off site. You get what you pay for in most cases.

Steve,you are quite right, but my first reponse was slightly tongue in cheek, and a response to your colleague having a goat other trades. It is true tha some jobs are undervalued by the public at large, but the worst has to be gardeners, closely followed by decorators. I think that is because most people can garden or decorate themselvs to some degree.

With regard to your insurance, are you definietely covered overnight? Last time I looked (to be fair it was some years ago), to be covered the van had to be locked and inside a locked compound or garage

my set of chisels cost iro £70 and my hammer £50.
then theres the array of hand planes,power planes and the likes,my old meastro van used to be filled to the gunnels when i was a subby and that was just on the portable stuff,plus a generator.
if i had my time again i'd be a bricky,take the mixer out of the equation and spend about £300 complete on tools,oh and dont forget the bucket to carry them in.dont need a van,you could even walk to the job

learnt a very long time ago.to say if someone else has fitted the frame then i either redo it myself and charge or say find someone else.
got caught a few times when i 1st started out,you soon stop being green dont cha??

I seem to recall many years ago that I asked the same question i.e, "how can you justify your high charges" The quote was just £45.00. The answer: £5 to do the job and £40 for knowing how to do it!
