Bitumen paint running with water

Hi all,

I have a retaining wall at the side of my house that is now going to be part of our utility room. My builder has built the wall up higher and put the roof on.

He suggested painting the whole retaining wall in bitumen paint before putting up battons and plaster boarding it. I have painted the wall and the new part which was bare block has dried, but where I painted the old wall (which was block but had old paint on it) it has not dried and there is actually water running down the wall.

Any suggestions on what I have done wrong??

You are saying you built a retaining wall and thought some bitumen painted on the inside which you are going to fix battens too will keep the damp out?

No the retaining wall was existing I didnt build it.

Bitumen is no good for keeping the inside damp free for a retaining wall when applied to the inside without something to hold it against the wall. How high is the earth behind it? Not totally sure of the existing and proposed tbh, gotta drawing?

The earth behid the wall is about 6 foot. The land belongs to somebody else so cant touch it. Sorry dont have a drawing.

It has always been a utility room, but was more of a lean to temporary construction before. We never had an issue with damp before, but my builder said that's what he'd do just to be on the safe side.

What would you do to try and keep damp out?

Newlath membrane system or similar system or a proper product like RIW then a block wall against it to hold it there.
