insulation to a floor ?

Hi All,

I am shortly to insulate the floor space in a bedroom, which is partly over a garage and hence is a cold room.

Do I:

A) insulate in-between the joists (some floorboards up etc) with loft type roll insulation or..

B) Glue kingspan type board to the underside of the garage roof (asbestos!) I have been advised not to move the asbestos and don't be drilling or cutting it etc.

Thoughts please.

Personally, and not having full details on the condition and type of asbestos, I would advise doing something like gently spraying a mist of pva over the asbestos first. This will seal it without causing fibre release. A large pump-up garden sprayer will do. Then, I'd advise battening from the walls, and making a free-floating grid beneath the ceiling. Then fix your chosen insulation to that. If the asbestos isn't well-fixed and the glued kingspan falls down, you could be in a bit of a mess.

Hello, thanks for the response. The asbestos looks OK and is held in with large screws with large washers. Guess it must be for fireproofing. But yes if it cracks, then trouble!

I think by the time I battened out a frame, I could have the floor boards up etc. I'm hoping not lift them all, do them in zones and pull insulation through (that's the thoughts anyway) so time for time I guess

You could also lay hardboard over the floor boards then relay the carpet.

Do you think that would make a massive difference.

I was going seal the gaps @ skirting board anyway & use duct tape over the joins (the floorboards are T&G) so will be more gapped after cutting.

Yes it will help as you can butt the boards tight together and seal around the floor where it meets the skirting.

No gaps-no draughts.
