I just moved into my new house about a month and a half ago. Been using a lot of tips on this forum to fix the place up, but now i've run into my first major problem.
Last night just before midnight the pipes started making a high-pitched whining sound. Nobody was home or using any running water when it started. It is constant and never stops. It also sounds like there is running water.
I checked every water-based appliance in the house. Nothing was leaking, wet, etc. I turned everything on and off. When I did that with any faucet, it would cause a brief change in the pitch of the whine, but it never stopped it.
I went online and i've tried all sorts of the quick-fix stuff, like leaving faucets on for a while, messing with toilet flappers, etc.
It ran all night, and I don't see any wet spots on any of the walls or ceilings, but you can hear the whine in every room of the house. It is strongest in the kitchen which shares a wall with the backyard. I can hear the whine from the backyard by that wall as well.
I'm currently terrified that theres some leak in my pipes spewing water inside my walls.
This is my first house, but I have to assume that this isn't normal. Time to call a plumber? Other suggestions? I really appreciate your time.

I had exactly the same scenario ( here in UK) it was a part of the water meter that had split - over here they are in a small pit in the sidewalk outside our houses - phoned the water supply co. and they fixed it for free - you`ll probably have to pay over there
