Insulation Question

I have two uninsulated brick bays in my bungalow - these rooms get very cold in winter and at night. Cavity walls, not closed at the top. The side external walls are cavity as well but have 50mm polystyrene boards in them.

I've had two insulation companies tell me that beads can't be mixed with boards as it might cause problems. Is that true, i mean, whats the difference if the boards are there, the beads hardly leave an air gap do they?

Also with the cavities being open at the top, i guess beads might not be the best approach anyway.

All the external leaves aside from the front bays were rebuilt in the 90's so i think thats why they bays were left uninsulated. The external leaves were rebuilt in thermoblocks iirc, not sure if thats any good or not but the rest of the house is noticeably warmer than the front rooms with the bays.

Any ideas on insulation options would be very much appreciated, especially by my 12 month old who is currently in a room which drops to 15c at night already!

I am not quite sure what they mean by that. Perhaps they mean that injecting insulation would damage the boards?

Could you insulate the inside of the rooms? Obviously you will loose space this way, but it's an option.

Top the roof insulation up, and check the heaters for correct room sizing.

The two firms are correct, and the unsealed cavity won't be making that much difference

Just curious why that is - surely beads into an previously unfilled cavity will fill up the cavity. What difference does it make if there is a board in place?

I'd say that the two are designed to work in a certain way, and there is a risk of trapped moisture or movement of moisture occurring if the two were combined

It may work if it was done, but no-one is going to want to do it and take the responsibility
