Hi. I have made an error measuring my for a replacement window. It has come and it is 10 cm too tall. I don't fancy paying out for another window. So I was thinking about cutting part of the sandstone sill to fit the window in. Sill is 13 cm high. I considered taking 5 or 6 cm of sill and may be 4 or 5cm off of the sandstone lintel. Lintel is 25 cm high with a span of 74cm. Any ideas on this proposal. Or would it weaken the lintel too much. Window is on gable end at back and is only supporting the few bricks above it along with the roof androof purlin. Any advise welcome.

OP says it 10mm oversize, and then talks about taking 4-6mm of the top/bottom, 5mm of each side of the frame, 10mm?

Can you not lower the sandstone cill, 100mm is a lot to lose. One other solution is to take window back and get it cut down but that depends on openers etc and then get glass re made.
For the love of Christ, get a new window, or......

In all fairness i had to re-read thinking it was 10mm mesel.

Could you remove the head of the new window frame, cut down the jambs by 10cm and replace the head - reorder glass to suit the new window size?

Yes, sadly, I would take it back and see what they can offer to cut it down.

If you are patient you may be able to get rid of it to someone looking to do a cut in, but you wont get as much as you paid for it. May be worth asking the mfr if they can help in some way.
