Since the hot weather this week, we walk in the (usually closed room) and it stinks of what i think is gas.

The smell of gas is not unique to gas.

Natural gas (methane) has no smell. It's Methanethiol that is added to make it stink.

Correct!

That's because methanethiol (CH3-S-H) is a natural product of organic decay. It can even be found in farts, especially if you eat a lot of asparagus.   The smell of decay is usually tainted by the presence of other chemicals like hydrogen sulphide or the truly nauseous methylamine (CH3-NH2) but, if methanethiol dominates, you might be fooled.

Even so, this:

Call your gas provider on 0800 111 999 and tell them you think you can smell gas, they'll be out pronto to check it and it won't cost you anything.

is always the best advice.

Hey all, on monday i switched off the gas whilst we were away. Got back yesterday, and no smell in room. Temps have also returned to nornal room temperature too.

Switched gas back on at 6pm yesterday, checking the room every hour or so. This morning no smell other than the "just decorated" smell we used to get since decoration in September.

Will monitor it of course, with window and door shut. Hopefully this is another case of stinky paint, as featured on Watchdog a while back regarding Crown Breatheasy paints smelling like all sorts of horrid things.

Again, thanks for all your advice. Tony

I turned the gas off the night i first asked for advice, then we went on holiday.

Back from holiday no smell, gas back on, no smell. Any hint of smell back again, yes i'll apply that advice thank you.

No need to make it sound like i'm ignoring you all! Feel free to delete this thread, if some of you think it's fell on deaf-ears. It hasnt. I now have a number i can call, and some others agreeing that certain decorating materials can give off gas-like smells.

British Gas did an annual service shortly after my last post, and found no sign of escaping gas, so we just kept the smallest room well ventilated. The longer the warm days went on, the smaller the smell got. Gonna put this down to the paint giving off a gas-like smell. Thanks for your help.

did the british gas guy use a manometer at the meter? (big yellow plastic thing with a tube attached) did you see him? is it even part of his 'service'?

berkshire is plenty far enough away from me!

carry on.............

WhyTF would you risk your home and family for a FREE phone call?

When we had one of our rooms painted, the smell was so bad that you could not use it. We called the colour fart white.

Hi Tony,
I see this was back in 2012 but it's exactly the same symptons we are facing after decorating recently.
Anyway was wondering how long it took before the paint fully became odourless in all temperaturs?
Thanks.

The smell will disappear immediately, if the smell is actually a gas leak and ................................
