Hi all,

I want to make something like this to use as a cabinet door covering:

Would this be something a beginner could achieve? I'm thinking I'd:
  1. Buy some planks of wood the same thickness
  2. Trim a couple down to get a variety of widths
  3. Chop the planks into bits of varying length
  4. Flatten the corners using a router table, I'd probably make something like this - http://www.instructables.com/id/Custom-Router-Table/
  5. Apply wood finish
Is this doable to cover a couple square meters, or am I bonkers? Missus and myself really like the look.

Thanks,

Russ

what sort of hinges are you using, trad hinging wont work if you are going for concealed type (kitchen type) be careful about the weight, concealed hinges tend to sag if overloaded.

Yes, it's doable, providing you have the right kit

You'd probably be better off with a mitre saw, a router and a bearing guided mitre bit. The sequence would then be:
  1. Buy some planks of wood the same thickness
  2. Trim a couple down to get a variety of widths
  3. Mitre the edges on the ends
  4. Chop the planks into bits of varying length
  5. Repeat last two steps as needed until enough strips have been created
  6. Apply wood finish
Saves the cost of a router table

HWW was dead right when he pointed out that a door made this way won't hang on conventional concealed (kitchen) hinges - it'll be too deep and too heavy. You'd probably be better off going to something along the lines of a cranked semi-overlay hinge, like these

Howya gonna wipe that down when the sprogs have smeared chocolate spread sandwiches all over it? :p

That is a very good point. That, and the fact that we originally had our heart set on sliding doors, which of course wouldn't work like this! This is gonna take some more thought I think, darn it.

It would, but I think you'd need a false stile attached at each edge (left/right) of the door to match the "height" of the appliqué blocks. If you were willing to put a 1in wide hardwood edging all round then the door panel could be made from 9mm or even 6mm hardwood plywood. giving a depth variation of 9 or 12mm for an 18mm thick door. Or is that not sufficient variation?
