Folding felt around a difficult roof join.

Hi, hoping someone can help me. Maybe because I was regularly teased and called Mark Three Sheds, I decided that adding one of my 8x6 ft shed to my 16x8ft, to make an L shaped building I call my cabin, I would have a more usable work space. It has worked well, and for the past couple of years has been leak free. However this summer it has started to leak in heavy rain, and I need to re-felt or seal joints.

When I first felted the roof I had trouble folding the felt around the main joint where the two ridges meet, and I am sure this is the source of the leak.


Does anyone have any tips on the best laying technique to avoid this happening again? Do I use some sort of paint on waterproofing before I lay more felt, or do I just put lots more felt layers on? As the cabin is visible from our house and also neighbours houses, I want to make sure it looks neat.

Any help gratefully received.

Is it leaking in both valleys and the ridge and how did you put this felt on.

You would be better with sheet lead for these junctions.

Hi, yes it's leaking from both valleys, and also just the other day close to the apex.

I folded the felt from the extension part into and around the valleys first, then overlapped as best I could using the long run over the back, but as the shape does not lend itself to a non flexible sheet, it was very difficult to get much of an overlap, maybe a couple of inches or so.

Re the sheet lead, I presume I'd attach that then overlay with felt again?

What I would really like is some felt that stretches, so that you can persuade it to go round an internal angle.....! (not asking much)

If I was doing that roof in felt I would use torch on felt and I would use a full width down the valleys then felt onto that.

Id do as Catlad said, torch on strip down centre of valley then run the sides into it.

As said, cut 1 roll in half and lay in valleys, running the excess over the ridge. Drop field sheets onto the valley sheet by at least 6 "

Then fit ridge pieces on top of the lot. Sheets should run vertically with a seperate ridge piece.
