Replaced central heating pump. Now hot rads but no hot water

Are you quite sure they are EXACTLY the same model?

The replacement is a Drayton MA1/679-3 which is a direct replacement (wired up the same as British Gas unit), the old one a British Gas unit. The old unit spindle was solid and it my attempt (and lack of knowledge) to free it must have turned it too much i guess. With broken spring anchors and position lever it had to go anyway.

Will install the actuator onto the old, freed-up valve and see what we get. If no hot water into the hot water tank then i guess it's time to change the valve also.

Thanks for all the replies - will let you know what happens

Just because it has the same colour wires it does not mean that it is the same type of valve.

Most only turn about 35° but a few turn 360° and the actuator moves them 180° at a time but always in the same direction!

Thanks for the info Tony

I havnt had a problem changing a BG valve for a Drayton before, I guess I must have been lucky

Hello guys

All the information that i searched on this site and elsewhere points to this Drayton model as being a direct swap, wires and all. I will be trying it later today so lets see what happens.

Thanks again

So back home and checked wiring old v new. Same colours, so have wired in like for like. Now i have found a 'floating' black wire which comes from a
thermostat at the base of the HW cylinder along with a Red, Blue & Earth

Blue connects in with the grey from the actuator.
Red connects into a blue from a 4-core cable which has a Red, Blue, Yellow and Earth. Where should i wire this 'floating' black into?

Have the wiring layout from the MA1/679-3 with me if anyone wants to refer me to that.

*** Just fired the system up with the black still not connected. Heating works fine, radiators get hot. As soon as i push the switch to put the HW on it turns the boiler off. Turn the HW switch off and the boiler fires up again. So looks like this black wire could be the cause, or is the valve broken?

On the diagram there is a HTS3 Cylinder Stat diagram. From this there is a Common, Calling and Satisfied. Is this the thermostat on the boiler?
Calling goes to Orange, Satisfied goes to Grey.

Where do you think this 'floating' black from the HW tank should go? Where should this thermostat connect into the system? Does the thermo send a signal to the actuator to say "reached temp, turn valve off"?

Here's a kicker. Think i sorted out the wiring but still no hot water going into tank. Removed the head unit to turn the valve around 180 but the spindle head was nowhere to be seen. Found it stuck in the recess of the head! Snapped clean off. So when i thought it was turn it was in fact doing bugger all!
Tomorrow i tackle installing a new valve after all. Bloody plumbing!

The HTS3 is the cylinder thermostat, controls the temp of the water in the HW cylinder. There is a good explanation of how a 3 way valve works in the Boiler & Central Heating FAQ's by D.Hailsham, and for a wiring diagram try here: http://octaveblue.co.uk/c_heating/index.htm All wires need to be correctly connected in a 'Y' plan or else it wont work properly!
