Hi there

Just bought property in devon old single phase mains cable (230v) comes through door frame.
The frame is old and is rotten and water comes through where cable is.

Western power want over a 1000£ to move it ????
Get this in that they want me to collect the white box from plymouth and then fit it 500mm from ground and out side. In doing so i then got to get my electrician to put 2.5meter tails from my meter to there fuse.
but my consumer unit is stay in same place just want cable out of frame???

Can some one tell me if this is right
Thank you

I fear it is - what did you actually ask them to do? If you want the cable moved, then you'll have to pay them to do it, and that never comes cheap.

Sounds like they have a policy of putting all meters outside now, and want that whenever it's moved, but I doubt that will make any difference to the price - moving it is moving it.

You always have the option of replacing the frame but leaving the cable where it is, if you don't want to spend £1000.

Where are you getting the meter box? Any builder's merchant can supply one of those.

You may get lucky when the surveyor comes to confirm exactly what has to be done.

My final bill for a new supply came down from £ 3000 to just over £ 900 when I accepted his advice and made a small change in my plans. The change involved extending the trench by a couple of metres to put the joint to the street cable under a grass verge instead of under my driveway. The refund of over £ 2000 was very welcome.

you would have to get electrian to move your tails if you had an outside box fitted, because they are your tails, not the dno's. why cant you keep the meter where it to, if you provide a new access hole the cost would be a lot cheaper, you need to remember the dno is a private company who are told how much money the supplier will give them for using there wires and equipment, you have to pay if you want it moved, but then they maintain it for nothing.

Thanks for replies

Just like to say i have not moved my C.U it is has we moved in it is the cable going through the frame i need moved.

So if i drill new hole in brick wall next to frame then they won,t have to move anything just pull cable out and back through new hole ???

once again thanks

It aint that simple normally as they'll have a live cable to pull back and then jam back through your new hole if they are happy, generally the only solution is to chat with the DNO and agree what you want as a rotten door frame is none of their concern as the owner should of maintained it correctly, and DNO+user request = £££££ and a kerching sound on their side of the phone

it depends on the type of cable, the fact its live is not a problem, if you post a pic i may be able to advise you better,(i work for wpd!)

Thanks will post pic
The cable is single phase and comes from over head and the water is pi--
in with the rain we are getting at mo

drill the hole for a new entry point and then ring their emergency service questioning the safety of the water following the cable & causing damage to your property (don't mention the rotten doorframe or that you have drilled the hole)
it wouldn't surprise me if a crew didn't attend to deal with it! Make sure you are in when they visit
