Hi,

I want to fit an Ikea Besta cupboard to the wall in a corner of a room.

I want it on the wall and not the floor as the fit is quite tight and the extra width of the skirting would make it stick out just that bit too much.

Its a big one, 2m * 40cm * 60cm.

One wall is external, brick, the other is also brick.

The corner that is not against the wall I can fit a leg but I was hoping not to need any on the other three corners.

How many screws (i.e. every x cm) and what size would you recommend?

Thanks,

Ian

if its a floor standing unit you probably will not be able to wall mount off the floor as the back will have little strength so wont take any weight

Sorry forgot to mention that I have some right angle attachments that attach to the walls of the cupboard and you screw though a hole in the weak back - these are the standard things Ikea use to attach things to walls.

unless the cabinet is designed to hang off a wall without floor support it will not work

have you got a link to the supports an cabinet please :D

You could cut the back to fit over the skirting or fit a spacer at the top to keep it tight to wall, would not recommend raising a flimsy ikea product.[Agree will Big-all]

Thanks for the responses guys.

These are the angle brackets I mentioned. They are used for holding wardrobes against the wall the kitchen cupboards on the wall.

The Besta range come with these plastic things to hold to wall.

They go behind the unit and you drill through the back and then screw through with a washer to hold it in place.

The 38cm and 64cm ones are designed to be hung on the wall, with just those plastic things, at the top. i.e 2 for a 60cm wide one and 3 for a 120cm wide one. I have used these successfully to put a 180cm * 20cm deep by 38cm high cupboard on the wall. To be honest I couldn't see the plastic things working but they did.

The metal things however are stronger and allow some wiggle to level it out.

My thinking was that if I screw the wall of the cupboard to the wall frequently enough, say every 60ish cm and they same with those metal things the thing would be held well enough.

Following the instructions, this cupboard needs to be attached to the wall, at the top using plastic things, to stop it toppling over.

fit a spacer at the top to keep it tight to wall,
I did this using bits of hardboard to secure wardrobes to the wall, and to hold up the base to account for uneven floor. I was really pleased with my self - didn't realise it was a recognised technique!

would not recommend raising a flimsy ikea product.
These are not flimsy! - I could barley lift the 180*20*38 one above my head. I agree some of their stuff is flimsy but these and their Pax wardrobes are pretty solid in my opinion.

To be honest, the worse thing that I will have to do it use 4 legs to hold it up high enough. I will need to fit to legs anyway to hold it high enough my working so the only question is will I take longer adding extra attachments or just use a few to keep it place and leave the legs on. It will defo be stronger with all four legs.

These are images of how it will look with four legs -

Doesn't look too bad I suppose.

Now I am unhappy about the placement of the network socket which I put there when thinking that is where my desk would go...

do the sides fix to the side off the base or do the sides sit on top off the base :?: :?:

sides sit on top

the weakest construction relying on the weight on the base for strength does it have cam locks [metal pin and rotating cam]

reading on further are you now happy on the floor ??

Sorry not quite sure what you mean. The base is much thicker than the walls. The walls sound a little hollow, like a door does.

Yes has these cam and screws.

These are the metal things I mentioned. Drilled 5mm holes and screwed them in. They will just stop it coming away from wall.

I will probably also drill through side into room wall to hold it too.

Yes - it would be very hard to take these legs off when against the wall, and very hard to get it high and level without the legs...Legs can stay on!
