Hi all. I have recently installed a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30Si. It's a pretty good boiler, uses less metered gas then my old Vailiant ecotech but seems to use a bit more electric. Anyway, it has an unnecessarily complicated method of re-pressurising the system that involves a provided filling key. The key needs to be pushed into a tube on the boiler then turned. Then another part needs to be turned as well. What they don't tell you on the brochure is just how hard you have to ram the key into the tube in order to get it to engage properly. Talk about childproof, it was almost adultproof! If you don't get a tight fit when you turn the filling knob, water will escape. It could be stiff because it's a new boiler but even if it loosens in future, the old screw cap valve on my Vailiant was soooooo much easier. Not to mention what happens if I lose the filling key. I'm tempted to just leave it in the boiler tube...

You have way too much time on your hands dude.

Us in the trade put a little silicon grease on the keys O rings but you could use soap...it will be easy to fit the key then.

The key is removable to comply with the water regs. The Vaillant system may appear simpler but unless you disconnect the hose it is not compliant.

Many boiler manufacturers are not bothered about compliance with out water regs.

misterdubya: thank you for taking the time out of your obviously busy life to read all of my post and provide such an insightful comment. No doubt you are some form of gas engineer with 90+ years experience, who fits boilers one-handed while browsing with the Iphone in the other hand just to help other posters with your searing common sense.

Gasguru: Genuine thanks for the water regs info. Always good to know these things. Don't imagine I'll have to top up the boiler much, but I'll grease/soap it like you said if it doesn't get easier.

Hi Im really surprised by your question to be honest, Worcester havent used this style of charging link for some time yet you have installed one recently ? is it a second hand boiler ? even so you shouldnt be having to top the system up more than say twice a year or so unless you are bleeding the system or releasing pressure some other way, if it is a problem just fit a standard filling loop externally of the boiler they are not expensive , the Worchester charging loop with the keys (there are two different sizes) never really took off and have been super seeded

Its an optional extra for all the greenstar range integral filling loop. The different size ones you refer to are for the old cdi range.

Well in that case I stand corrected I installed a CDI last week and had to use an external filling loop

Guys thanks for the replies, but....

.... I shouldn't have said I "installed" the boiler. I'm a client and I paid for it to be installed. Didn't mean to come off like someone in the trade.

Second, it's a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30Si, not a CD boiler.

Thirdly, I was just trying to give people a warning about the filling key, although it may be just my particular boiler, because on the boiler manual and official video here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUsBw1ZpiKY

It doesn't say anything about just how hard the key needs to be rammed into the tube to engage.

PS I don't have a tray underneath the boiler like in the video to keep my filling key on, because the condensing pipe had to be run where the tray would go. Have to keep it on my key chain I guess :D
