HI everyone.
Having been on trying to sort out a problem with my boiler which was diagnosed spot on now i have another challenge.
I need a new boiler, seeing most of you guys are fitting CENTRAL HEATING quite regularly what boilers would you recomend for a sealed system with a megaflow attached.
At the moment i have a POTTERTON ULTRA - 2 60 which is about 16yrs old , i believe this model is 18 kw, what advantage or disadvantage is there having a slightly bigger model because sometimes the house feels cold or is that the way the rads have been sized for the rooms or just keep with the same output.

Your advice would be much appreciated.........Thanks Cane32.

Glow worm ultra power cross between unvented and combi boiler
will outperform anything and has immersion backup.
All in one nice clean box.

Sorted.

Hi Cane the 60 can be range set between 18.8-22KW I would ask your installer to calculate the heat loss for you or use one of the calculators on here they are very good

Thanks for reply.
The boiler is wall mounted and with the MEGAFLOW CYLINDER upstairs in airing cupboard i have stored hot water for shower etc ........... so i don,t need it in the boiler, what other boilers do you recommend that you don,t get any problems with that are wall mounted and 18kw.
This is a replacement for my old boiler . You mention emmersion is that in the boiler because i have it in the megaflow..........if that makes sence not being a engineer. This not a new house and iam making sure i get like for like when i sort out what boiler i get.______________________ :) :)

Cane, is this really a very large house?

A typical 30s semi needs about 10-12 kW.

18 kw is for a four bed detached house.

The normal reason for rooms not heating up adequately is too small rads.

The best solution is to increase the insulation! Is your loft at least 350 mm ?

Draft excluders under doors and on the letterbox?

Tony

Tony ,

Correct it,s not a 30 something bungalow but a 16 year old 4 bed house needing a new wall mounted sealed system boiler running a megaflow cylinder. Could someone recommend some good boilers wall mounted

Thankx Dan for these models but iam restricted slightly on size.

The potterton i have was direct out the back of the boiler and i have face brickwork on the outside of the house and i do not won,t to start messing around with that.
Some options i have found are........Worcester Greenstar 18i system boiler .............Glow worm Flexicom 18sx system which has a optional direct flue out the back.
How do you rate these boilers and what are they like for reliability.
What would i be looking cost wise to remove old ,replace with new additional pipe work and commission etc.___________Cane. :)

In the past (and it still happens!) there was a tendency to oversize boilers, so the first thing to do is use the Whole House Boiler Size Calculator to find out what size boiler you really need.

As for moving the flue outlet and the brickwork, it's just a case of identifying the brick type, purchasing half-a-dozen and then getting a bricklayer to tooth out the bricks where the old flue was and insert the new bricks. I had this done when I replace my boiler as the new flue came out of the wall about a foot higher than the old one. My boiler installer did this, so I didn't even have to employ a bricklayer.

D.H Thanks for that.

I went on to.....WHOLE HOUSE BOILER SIZE CALCULATOR...one thing , I have a sealed system with Heatrae Sadia Megaflow cylinder, and 13 rads. Is 2000 watts enough for the hot water basic allowance or are there other factors that you have to allow for.

Not sure whether you can help or any one else can.
My boiler at the moment has a 15mm pipe running to it, are all the new condensing system boilers 22mm or are they 15mm.

Thankx for the info.........Cane.............

Intergas or Atmos as per Dans post.

Best boilers by a million miles, all you need is an approved installer.

Some say you should allow 3kW. The problem is that it all depends on the hot water usage and when the water is reheated. Although the hot water is delivered at mains pressure, as with a combi boiler, the water is not heated instantaneously but drawn from a cylinder, which is then reheated. You therefore may be able to set your main hot water heating time when the central heating is not required, e.g overnight, so the full output of the boiler is available.

I assume you are talking about the gas pipe.

Although the boiler connection is 22mm, that does not mean you have to have a 22mm pipe from the meter. The size of pipe is determined by: length of pipe; number of bends; kW of boiler; the requirements of other gas consuming devices served from the same piping system. Your installer will calculate the correct size pipe.

What size boiler did the calculator suggest?

D.H.
Went on to the boiler calculator and it told me.......16.34kw.

Yet if I work it out buy room sizes and ceiling height........BTU,s divided by ...... WATT,s...... do I have to allow for pipe work etc , other wise the calculation tells me something completely different.

As for boilers........INTERGAS..... Not a bad boiler from the info on it , can you experts tell me whether I need the ..A ..or... B ..kit as my pipe work comes up from under the work surface .

Sorry for all the questions as you proberly work out I want to know a lot just so I understand what the Heating Engineer is talking about.

Thankx for all your input and advice much appreciated from the experts. Cane.
