We're having new windows put in, however, they need to cut back the existing tyrolean render and then repair it afterwards. What we're worried about is that the render repairs won't blend in properly.

However, we're getting conflicting advice as to what to do. One guy has said cut back the bear minimum and another has said cut back at least 3 inches.

Any ideas?

HI,
If possible, can your w/frames be fitted from inside the property? That way you might be able to butt up to the "knicker" line where the tyrolean and, hopefully, it's sub-render now end?

If you have to cut the tyrolean, then do it at the frame if possible. Unless the site requires it, dont go cutting the tyrolean back, it can be difficult and fiddly to match up, plus if it's painted you'll never match the faded paint.

Ultimately, it depends on the type and size of the new frames, and to some extent, on the type of in-situ frames, and how carefully they take them out.

Thanks Dan, that's really helpful

Not sure they'll be able to fit the windows from the inside but will check

If you do have to patch it i find its easier to just use sand and cement render and then make it look like terolene with a small stiff brush patting the surface to make the look of the terolene

Or a small bunch of "twigs"taped together and dab them into the s/c mix, you get more of a "stipple" than you do with a brush..
