Got a question for all you bright sparks that know a lot more than me about the dark arts of electrics. About 12 months ago I got an old house re-wired and since that time I have had to change a huge number of bulbs and fuses. There is a set of under cabinet light bulbs in the kitchen that are getting changed for the second time in 12 months, and I would say that at least 50% of the bulbs in the lamps in rooms throughout the house have blown in the last 12 months. We tend not to use ceiling lights, other than the kitchen and bathrooms so we use our lamps frequently. I am not sure if I can ever remember a fuse blowing in a lamp in our previous properties but at least 3 or 4 lamps have needed the fuse changed. When I think about it the majority of the problems appear to be with kitchen cabinet lights and lamps on the ground floor - naturally they get more use than those in the bedrooms. The panels are all mixed so for instance the kitchen lights are on the same consumer panel as sockets on 1st floor and lights on the ground floor etc...

Our electrician is a very good guy and does work for me both professionally for my business but also around the home here. I have no probs asking him about this but would like some views before I speak to him. Do I have a problem here and is there something he should be addressing or are lamps and bulbs just pretty crap nowadays? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Just the plug fuses - no fuse has ever tripped or blown on the consumer panels. Not conscious of buying loads of crap, cheap bulbs (well any more so than before!!).

What type of fittings are we talking about that blows the lamps/bulbs.
I guess the lamps are a quite low load? So fusing should not really be an issue, I would inspect the lamp holders for damage or over heating.
