Hi Wotan

Can you provide some more detail? Was it a Windows update or a 3rd party product? Which Operating System and browser do you use? Does it happen all the time?

Windows home premium7, using Internet explorer as the browser. It happens almost everytime I shut the computer down, message 'Do not power off automatic updates being installed' I assume this to be Windows update? panic over all sorted now

Let me point you in the right direction. Lastpass.

I used to have all my websites with similar passwords, I could not remember which was what etc and when my PC nearly screwed up on me I would have lost the lot using the OS remembering bits.

Now I use Lastpass (and there are other password managers) not only does it detect me joining a new site and offer a unique secure password, it remembers it so the next time I go there it auto logs in for me.

It can do this on any PC, anywhere.

I even have an app for my phone so I have them all with me all the time protected by a single master password.

I wish I'd done this earlier.

Edit: This is also much more secure than using and allowing IE to know them - have you not seen how insecure IE is?

There are very simple ways to discover peoples passwords in a few obvious steps in most browsers. Always better to use software as suggested.
