i live in a flat with gas central heating. it's a Halstead Quattro boiler (don't know whether it's sealed or not, but would guess not as it does my hot water too).

the boiler, and plumbing, has been making noises ever since i've lived here (6 months). always sounds like there's air running through the system as it makes bubbling noises all the time. one of the radiators even sounds like a stream. had a look on the british gas website yesterday, and it said that if the top of my radiators are cold and the bottom hot i should bleed. turns out they needed bleeding, so i bled them.

only 2 of the 11 radiators actually bled water (after some hissing), the rest just hissed and then stopped hissing, but no water! a while later i would hear some bubbling through the system and they would hiss some more... still no water.

just woke up to find that the boiler isnt working, has a red light glowing with LOCKOUT written underneath it. in a moment of inspiration :) i pressed the reset button. nothing.

i thought bleeding the system would be harmless - guess i was wrong. i know nothing about boilers, so any help would be appreciated.

cheers

You just need to pressurise the system agian by letting water through the Filling Loop. All will be restored! See reference section.

just searched the Plumbing -> Central Heating sections for the text "filling" and "loop"... didnt come up with anything.

any chance for a direct link?

cheers for the link.

right, ive taken the cover off the boiler. found the silver braided thing. no valves at either end! ... is it the wrong braided tube or is it not a sealed system?

oh, and the pressure thing reads 0 (which is where i presume my problem lies).

there must be a point of isolation on this flexi or something just before or after. Otherwise the system would just keep filling and eventually start coming out of the safety discharge outside

If the silver braided thing is in the boiler casing it probably isn't the filling loop. Look under the boiler.

will have a look tomorrow, when there is daylight (as the boiler is outside in a cupboardy thing).

might post a picture too

Try to identify the mains cold water into the boiler or DHW inlet. There should be a valve arrangement connected by a flexible braided hose to one of the heating pipes, usually the return. This should all be external to the boiler.

To underline that, the filling loop is NOT part of the boiler. The flexy bit might be missing, so look for a couple of chrome fittings near each other where one could be fitted.

yay, found something!! :D

there are 5 pipes that lead into/out of the boiler.

followed them and found this:

could this be wat i am looking for? only seems to have the one valve...

if this is it, do i need to have the power to the boiler for the pressure gauge to work?

That`s it .the valve may have a turnbutton missing or be a screwdriver slot.....power off to boiler when filling..That is a bodged up filling loop :!: and needs to be done properly.there is a risk of syphoning water from the c/heating back to the mains supply...@ the least, please remove hose and leave disconnected unless filling system..More technical queries, ask the other guys, I just happen to be online ;)
