thanks for comments on p-trap toilets. I have since given up that search and been looking for something that can be fitted with some sort of bend. I have found this toilet:

I checked with the supplier and they say that the soil outlet is 29 cm from the back of the wall. However, my vertical soil pipe is 32cm from the wall at the furthest point. I'd obviously like to avoid having to bring the wall out 3cm, which seems like a lot of work for such a small distance. It does look like there is space under the pan though for maybe putting in some kind of pipe that bends backwards and then round again to the soil outlet. Can anyone say whether this is might be possible in order to gain the 3cm required, and what sort of connector that would be? Many thanks for all advice.

Try a flexible pan connector, these have as much as 4 to 5 inches of flex in any direction.
