Help.

We have a Salus Programmable Thermostat (RT500RF) and with a bit of trial and error have come to understand the useless instructions, ie the time "sets" is what time it will come on and will stay on to until the temperature you have set is reached. There are five available settings which we use and are set to come on and off during the day, and then early to late evening.

The question that i am asking is why has it now randomly started to come on, on its own in the early hours of the morning at a temperature above the frost setting when none of the "sets" have been set to that time? I am starting to think that this may be a faulty thermostat. Anyone agree?

I would be inclined to think a faulty frost stat, though I dont know these programmer/stats.

Where is your boiler as they have a frost stat built into them. if in the loft for instance

i dont know the stat but some ive seen have a night setback temp setting and that could be a bit high?

when its out of hours its in night setback?

Gasandoilman, its positioned in a attached garage on an external wall
WDIK, whats a "night set back"?

hiya I have just had one of these fitted and its really not what I was wanting! It did make me chuckle as the instructions are a nightmare and very unhelpful! How are you finding it? The problem I have is that I asked for something that I could program so the heating could would come on at a set time and go off at a set time. This doesn't appear to work like it at all it has to be on all the time. My major worry is that if the temperature is low the heating could be on all (and off and on) all day.

we thought we were getting something like you were expecting, to be honest i think its over complicated and a little long winded. It took us ages to realise that there was no "off" time and that it only comes on and stays on untill the temperature entered and then goes off. To be honest i prefer the old mechanical ones which were nice and simple, ie Set on time and set off time.

I had the salus RT500RF fitted it was great set at 13c I just turned it up when needed. however someone has been messing with it and its now programmed coming on and off all day. I dont want it coming on when im not at home but cannot get it set as it was when fitted. can anyone help???

thanks for your help. I do have the that instruction manual but it is so confusing. Ive tried everything in it but I must be doing something wrong.

Salus Programmer

Press Set, Press up or down to select Mon-Fri or Sat-Sun

Press Select to move on to settings

Number 1 will be displayed, which is the setting for time you want it to come on in the morning. Select the time you want heating to come on in the morning (e.g. 07:00 am) by moving the up and down arrows, then press select to move on to the temperature at which you want it to come on at (e.g. 20*C).

Once desired temperature is set press select again and then Number 2 will be displayed, this is the time for it to go off in the morning (e.g. 10:00 am), press select again and set the temperature to 5*C which will mean the heating will go off at that time (e.g. 10:00 am).

Press select again and Number 3 will be displayed, this is the time for the heating to come on in the evening (e.g. 16:00), press select and set the temperature (e.g. 20*C)

Press select again and Number 4 will be displayed, this is the time for the heating to go off in the evening (e.g. 22:00) press select and set the temperature to 5*C this will turn the heating off at that time (e.g. 22.00)

Press select again and Number 5 will be displayed, all you need to do is set the time and temperature settings the same as Number 4 (e.g. 22:00 and 5*C) (make sure time and temperature on Number 5 is set to the same as Number 4 otherwise the heating may not turn off. Then press set. If you want the temperature to stay at a higher temp overnight then number 5 temp leave at about 13*, but remember heating will come on full if if drops below 13* until the room the thermostat is in reaches 13* again.

Remember if you have just set the times and temperature for Mon-Fri you will then need to do same again for Sat-Sun

If you require the heating on all day e.g. 07.00 to 23.00 and you use settings 1 and 2, you also must program settings 3, 4 and 5 to 23.00 and 5*c (or whatever time you have programmed it to go off) or the settings on 3,4 and 5 may override the settings on 1 or 2.

Also remember if you alter the temperature after the timer has turned the heating off, you will need to manually in off again before going to bed by pressing the down arrows until it reaches 5*C.

Simple, the other thing to remember is that they are wireless, and if someone local to you has one it may trigger your reciever and vice versa so you will need to change the frequency which is shown in the manual.

cheers leeds plumber got it all sorted now.
Thanks everyone for all your help.

I dont think that any of you have understood what this unit does!

Its not an on/off thermostat! Its a programmable thermostat!

Simply it sets the room temperature for each of the set time periods. Say 21 C during the activity times when you get up and in the evenings. Overnight it just keeps the house at the set back temperature of perhaps 6 C - 10 C

Its very simple and gives greater comfort but you you must understand what it does first.

Hi,

We've just had one of these same thermostats installed on a new combo boiler. Followed the advice on here so setting 4 and 5 are both set to 5c, but we're having the radiators come on at night still. Tried resetting and restncing the thermostat but no luck. Any advice at all?

Thanks

First of all, thee thermostats are now very popular and I have come across three instances where the unit was being switched by another RT500RF thermostat in a neighbouring property. So try changing the operating frequency and see if that cures it. The instructions tell you how, but make sure you follow them carefully and to the letter.

If that doesn't work, next time it comes on when you think it shouldn't, look at the actual room temperatue shown on the display and compare it with the current set temperature (press one of the up / down buttons once to see this) if the 'set temperature' is higher than the actual 'room temperature' then the setting needs changing. If not, are both indicators lit on the receiver? if they aren't, someting else such as a frost stat is turning the heating on.

I fitted a Salus RT500RF in my conservatory to control the electric heating in there. Unfortunately for me, I think the lowest value you can set it to, is 14 degrees. So, in the winter when we rarely use the conservatory, the heating kept coming on, because the usual ambient temperature in there is about 9 degrees. If we had used it in the main house, that would be OK because the temperature wouldn't fall below 14 degrees overnight.

The Salus is actually quite flexible and allows a lot of different temperatures to be set during each day to match your lifestyle. It's not too difficult to set up, if you follow the instructions carefully, but it can be tedious because of the repetitive nature of doing so.

It wouldn't have been my first choice thermostat, but It was the only one I could find that the receiver switching contacts were sufficiently rated for the electric heating without the need for an additional relay. But apart from not being able to set it very low, it works fine. I just switch it off completely when we won't be using the conservatory for a long time.
