New house, what is this switch.

Complete plumbing ignoramus. Just had my first gas bill. Now I've picked myself off the floor, I'm checking things. Need a steer what this switch does, do I need it on etc. is it the immersion heater?

It was on, would this drive my gas boiler to run too hard/much and explain a high gas bill?

Thanks in advance, and I'm sorry for the question, aware this is probably pretty basic stuff!

Yes, it's the immersion heater switch.

Your gas bill may be high but it's got nothing to do with the immersion.

Yes, that's the switch for he immersion. If it's on you'll be heating your water using electricty, which is much more expensive than gas.[/quote]

Your gas bill would be less if your immersion was on, whilst your electric bill would be bigger.

The reason for the high bill is, if you haven't worked it out already

if it's your first gas bill in the house, are you sure it's not estimated, and that both the current and previous meter readings are correct?

Also check whether your meter is reading in ft3 but you're being billed in m3.

No to both questions.

The reason for the high bill is, if you haven't worked it out already , the COLD weather over the last few months.

Not to mention that you dont need your hot water 'on' constantly.
