2nd Turbo has gone in 9 months

Hi,

I purchased a 2007 2.5 CRDI XE sorrento in October 2011 from a used car dealer. Within 2 days I had reported 2 faults (one was resolved by having a fuel filter fitted) and the other was an ongoing problem (high pithced noises at certain revs).

For months the car went back and forth between different garages within the dealership but nothing was getting done about it. Eventually in June 2012 the turbo blew, and they replaced the turbo for me free of charge as it had been an ongoing problem. They said I had a 12 months warranty on the turbo.

Now 9 months later, the turbo has gone again. I spoke to them and they said its not down to them to repair the turbo and to speak to Kia. Where do I stand on this? Why would Kia repair the turbo for me? The car has only done 3k miles since the turbo was replaced.

I have spoken to 3 mechanics and they all said the dealer should put a new turbo on and find out what has caused 2 of them to fail.

Its down to the supplying dealer to sort this one, and I can't see why Kia would get involved really - unless the replacement turbo was supplied by them new.
I suspect the turbo wasn't a new one after the first failure.....can you confirm this?
The main problems concerning turbo failure are lubrication related.

Go back to the dealer. Do everything in writing (eg email) If they won't supply and fit a new turbo then explain to them that you will take them to court.

You will win hands down.

Im guessing oil starvation killed the 1st one, and oil flow wasn't checked when they fitted the new unit, hence the premature failure of the new unit.

I have always expected that turbo units would have used sealed ball races.

Do some have engine oil lubrication?
 
They have floating bearings, Tony that rely on oil pressure to keep them that way. Sealed bearings wouldn't last long due to the extreme heat so they have a pressurised oil supply, and then a gravity drain back to the sump.
