Our desktop computer is slowly dying and we are wondering whether to replace it with a laptop. (This is more for space saving than to move around and take out) are laptop as good as desktop in memory, robustness etc?. Any recommendation. We use the computer mainly for internet, word processing, desktop publishing and childrens games and it is used every day, several times a day!

Personally, I'd plump for another desktop. Benefits are expandability. Want a better graphics card? Just buy a better one and install it. Keyboard goes faulty? Buy a new one and plug it in,,, you can't do that with a laptop. Want a better monitor? etc, etc, etc, ;) ;)

If you are keen to save space, then modern laptops will give you the capability to do the things you mention quite adequately.

As has been mentioned, they less expandable or customizable. I also find spending too long peering at a smaller screen hard work.

You might well find that a decent laptop on a special offer gives you more "bang for your buck" than a desktop -- the market is (I think) more competitive for laptops now.

yes I had a feeling laptops didnt seem to last very long. We normally get a good 6+ years out of the desk top as we only use it for home work provide laptops for work. I think we are going to plump for a cheapish laptop and see whather we like it. As the desktop hasnt completely died it means we can use both for a while then see if i can live with the small screen on the laptop!! At least i may get some computer time and not fight with children!

Get both.

A desktop that will play the games etc - after all the kids are going to grow and want to use it more. There is homework yet.

And a laptop so that you can surf and do your stuff in peace wihout the kids making a mess of it.

Yes, you can.

I did mean the onboard integral keyboard Monkeh.
I used to have a works lappy and hated the keyboard on it, so plugged in a usb one as well as a proper mouse.
I still stand by the fact that a desktop is ultimately more expandable though. I don't think anyone's made a laptop yet that will accept a NVidia GTX 650 graphics card.
