This was supplying a 2kW electric fire, a small LCD TV, and a freeview box.

It had been switched on for about 30 mins when there was a lot of crackling and everything went off.

I'm a bit confused. I wouldn't expect that loading to do anything catastrophic to a "10A Extension Lead" or a plug with a 10A fuse in it,would you?

Whats the reference to "3A 250V" on the extension all about?

Kind Regards, John

3A is the wound maximum current rating. The extension lead was fully unwound.

The loading shouldn't have caused failure. I can only assume a loose connection was to blame.

You'd have hoped that me of all people would have noticed before it actually failed

Hence everything's running on extention leads. I'll probably (not) get round to wiring a proper socket one day...

And this is why I always check a new plug. And an old one if I've got 20 seconds.

I bought a 4 way extension a couple of years ago and took it apart because there was a flicker when used for a light. The pin for the neutral had never been drilled for a screw. The neutral wire was simply pushed into the hole in the pin.

I thought that till you indicated it was in your home Rf, im surprised with you having that set up at home

It's outside in the garage. One of the central heating pipes burst over the winter, and I haven't got round to sorting it, so this is my temporary lash up to keep me warm!

That extention used to just do the telly, and later the freeview box.
