A few question re our joiners recent work.....

Hi,

I've had a joiner in fitting architrave and skirting but there a few questions.

What is best - screw skirting to wall or glue as he claims the glue will come away so we've got lads of filling to do.

Also after he fitted out a small empty property they didn't clean up, they left saw dust everywhere, is this standard or does it simply depend on the joiner?

Finally should joiner have filled all gaps/holes with filler?

As for filling holes in, it could be agrued thats the decorators job some joiners do some don't, i always do. and as for leaving a mess that to me is unaceptable!

cleaning up is part of the job how much mess are we talking about,or is it your making a list to justify your complaint??,as for filling holes did your joiner price for this.i do not normally make good any holes as for gluing your joiner may well be correct with the conditions in your property?
would you expect him to be chaulking the boards to the wall aswell?

Joiner that doesn't fill his holes or cleans up isn't a tradesman. As my old apprentice instructor used to say "the job isn't finished until it's finished and tidied up". Those who say it's the decorators job to fill holes are a disgrace to their profession.

on site a joiner wouldnt be expected to caulk and fill, were not even expected to tidy up, thats what decorators and labourers are for, but if its a domestic type job they should tidy up, but only fill and caulk if theyve said they would, or its in the price.

wota load of crap,the op has said joiner.no mention of decorating so in your PROFESSIONAL eyes,you price a re skirt and suddenly within the price your now decorating a whole room.
so where will you stop pal.

Oh come the hell on, surely putting filler in the holes you yourself made in the skirting is perfectly reasonable.

Stopping and filling and sanding is a preferential matter and is sometimes preferred by the customer or their decorator.

We don't price it as such as we deem it final decoration, however we will do it if required. Always give the customer the choice where matters of finished visible work are concerned.

Also, often customers need to remove the skirting in some instances so filling would be inconvenient.

Cleaning up is mandatory although plumbers, electricians and joiners have yet to catch on unless there is a floor board up handy. I have yet to see any of these trades that own their own broom or shovel.

Hi,
Well the guy who did my work not only left the mess of cutting skirting, doors, architrave in very room of an empty bungalow which I wouldn't have minded, also he didn't fill which I also didn't expect him to do but his finish in many areas was poor and I didnt realise until i started filling the next day! My error.

Even though he said he'd come back to snagg I won't have him back and I'll, pay someone else to put it right.

Joiner was the only trade I didn't pick on recommendation and this was my only trouble.

Lesson learnt.

Traditionally joiners don't fill holes they just do a good job.On an quality job every screw hole will be plugged but the client will have to be prepared to pay a lot extra

if ive been asked to price for it then yes you are correct,but as others have said,where does my job as a craftsman stop and a decorators start?
i always clear/sweep up.

As a rule, if the woodwork is to be painted then the decorator fills any holes, if it is to be stained then the joiner should glue and plug the screw holes.

How much sawdust are we talking about exactly?
Can you see that he's swept up but still see rush strokes in the remaining dust? are there any offcuts left laying about? Are there other trades to go in?

If there are other trades going in could it have been a quick sweep?

Is it just a bit of dust that he hasn't vacuumed up?

I always sweep up but rarely vacuum in a vacant property if other trades are going in, even the painters cause dust, you could take it to the nth degree with cleaning up after cutting wood.

Do you have photo's of the shoddy work?
