I think the M6 will be ok at that time of day, the only problem will be an RTA, unfortunately Sally Traffic doesn't work weekends.

What do you want to come up to Manchester for? ;)

Mrs Secure swears by the toll, but every time we use it, it seems clear the other way.

Murphy's law, the one time we decide not to use it, the M6 will be jammed.... ;)

Dont waste your money . If you stay on M6 free bit- you can view the delightful sights of the midlands . You can almost smell the 'tuareg campfires' as you drive past the beduins camped on the red area of the hard shoulder .

Real taste of Britain :) .

We avoid the whole area around Birmingham like the plague. It's not just the M6, it's the M5 as well and it's been like that for many years.

Any other country would have done something about it by now.

Tell me about it! What a ridiculous place to site the engineering capital of the known universe..

For a run from Portsmouth to Manchester I assume you'll be using the M40?

If so, then I personally would turn West at the top of the M40 and take the M42 to the M5, then up the M5 to join the M6 at J8.

I've always found that to be a quicker route than taking the M42 eastbound and going all the way round Birmingham and back West again on the M6. Misses out the worst of the M6 Birmingham traffic too!

Yup. I've always done that.

A tip someone gave me years ago.

Yes, it can be - but the M42 Eastbound all the way round the south and eastern sides of Birmingham often comes to a complete standstill for mile after mile, and the M6 back round the north side can be even worse!

At a fiver each way for only 27 miles of decent road the M6 toll is just a rip off. Let all the lemmings pay to go that way and take advantage of the fact that they are leaving the old M6 from the M5 up to the toll road a lot clearer than it used to be.

Or you could go up the 3 to the 25 go around to the 1 north up the 1 and then over the 62

All the motorways around Birmingham are hopeless.

Some may accuse us of being over-reactionary but, in the past, we have gone from Manchester to the South-west via the M62, then the M1 and then cut across to the south of Birmingham.

Stupid, I know, but after having several bad experiences going the 'traditional' way we decided never again. I think it might not be so bad at night, though. Perhaps that's an option we could try.

Wow, that must add well in excess of 100 miles to the journey!
