Hi all, looking for a bit of advice. I have a switched socket (on a spur) underneath a worktop in the kitchen. It supplies the dishwasher and microwave. The microwave is on the worktop, dishwasher underneath, about 300mm away from the socket. The power cord for the microwave goes down the back of the worktop through a designated gap however I want to know whether I can cut the flex to the microwave and install an in line power switch so that we don't have to keep going in to the back of the cupboard to switch on/off/. The dishwasher is ok as has an on/off switch.

The image attached gives an idea of what I am on about (not the colour scheme btw!!)

I know that we can leave it on standby and the costs for energy will probably be less than what it would cost to make any changes but its just what we would prefer.

Any other suggestions would be welcome. thanks

you can spur from the double socket mate but rather than the mess, and the ripping youll get off here because your not qualified (i know, i get it all the time) couldnt you put an extension cable in underneath the unit and have a switched socket on the other end tucked in behind your microwave? If you see what i mean.
Not sure you can buy switched extension leads that are single. I know you can double because i have one, that may be another option.

Do you get that because you are unqualified, or because you give bad advice?

you can spur from the double socket

1) No he may not:
I have a switched socket (on a spur)

2) That isn't what he wants:
I want to know whether I can cut the flex to the microwave and install an in line power switch

Jonathan - what is the power consumption of the microwave? What fuse is in the plug? Those switches are generally meant for lights, you may struggle to find one to cope with the oven.

I'd just wrote war and peace telling you where to shove your comments then re-read the post and for once I agree with you sheds. I mis read and didn't see it was already on a spur. Sorry. Spurring of a spur is a no no.

thanks all. it has consumption of 1370 watts and 13a fuse. I've looked before at those remotes but the ones i saw were infra red but those work via wifi and would still have 2 to use elsewhere in the house

We have some of those but the ones bnq sell. They work well for out of reach sockets so should be just what you want. Don't forget they will also consume power but maybe less that the microwave in standby

Maybe not.

Mine must use almost nothing on standby - it has no clock, the display goes blank, even the keypad goes dead. It only comes back to life by opening and closing the door.
