Supply

An update-I did try to get them out for a preliminary once-over but they want forms filled and detailed plans drawn first.
Done that - now waiting for a response.

They got back to me eventually
£4K for the job.
16metres from pole to shed.
ouch
They want me to dig a trench but I want overhead?
The transformer has to have a "TX upgrade subject to wayleaves"
Whats this?

Basically the existing transformer isn't big enough for the existing and proposed load so they need to change it to supply you. The wayleave comment is a standard piece when working on or near private land

Thanks westie
I lived in the house at the end of that line for many years-the supply always seemed 'rough'
PCs, lightbulbs, kettles, microwaves, Tv's etc never seemed to last long.
Would this upgrade 'clean up' the supply?

Is four grand reasonable given Im doing the donkey work ?

Have I any chance of an overhead instead of digging?

If what the OP has told us is accurate, it sounds as if there is just one transformer supplying the village (or part of the village) and the place where the OP wants the new supply is near to the end of a fairly long run from that tranny. Would they be suggesting that he had to pay for an upgrading of that transformer serving the whole village (or a substantial part thereof) in order to be able to provide him with the new supply?

Kind Regards, John

Possibly as it could improve voltage regulation (keeping it close to 230V)

A large part of the cost will be for the transformer change.

Not really, we certainly are not installing new overhead services and I doubt any other DNOs are either.

From the amount quoted, I would say he is only being asked to make a contribution towards the cost, not the full amount[/quote]

Well, yes, that's probably the case, but I wonder how necessary the upgrade really is. He told us that "All I want it for is lighting and domestic power tools-and the all important kettle!!". Should it not be possible for him to be provided with a small supply, adequate for his needs, without having the upgrade the village's transformer? Would they have been operating so close to the limit that a few more amps would take them 'over the limit'? If so, is he perhaps being asked to make an appreciable contribution to the cost of a transformer upgrade that was probably already needed?

Kind Regards, John

What is the estimated wattage for each normal domestic property Westie? I seem to remember it is a stupidly low figure?

What is the estimated wattage for each normal domestic property Westie
Varies but can be low, so on a large housing estate with gas CH & water heating, choice of cooking and possibly an immersion heater it will be around 2kW (ADMD, After Diversity Maximum Demand).

In rural areas that may see off-peak heating and smaller numbers of properties it is generally higher.

Not knowing any details about the network etc I have absolutely no idea

I'm a little surprised that the figures are even that high. Ofgem figures indicate that the average domestic electricity consumption is about 3,300 kWh per year. Even if one made the pessimistic assumption that electricity was only consumed for 12 hours per day (and the same 12 hours for all households), that would still only amount to an average demand (over those 12 hours) of about 0.75 kW per household!

Fair enough - but if I were the OP, I'd certainly be (fairly tactfully - so probably not quite in those words :) ) asking them that question!! What is the smallest supply that a DNO would be likely to be prepared to provide?

Yes but we're talking about maximum demand not average.

My house falls into the description I gave, if I add up the number of houses on the estate and go and read the Maximum Demand Indicators at the local substation and divide by the number of houses per phase I get 1.9kW!
