Can low voltage downlighters be put in a lath and plaster ceiling?

I already have downlighters in a plasterboard ceiling and they get very hot and realise they would be a fire risk in lath and plaster as well as most probably unacceptable.

Thanks in advance.

Low voltage or Extra Low Voltage ( 230 is Low Voltage in the wording of electrical regulations ) ?

It doesn't matter what voltage, if the unit gets very hot then there is a fire risk.

Scorched and even charred joists and the undersides of floor boards are not un-common.

The bigger risk is the laths in the ceiling around the hot lamp are scorched, the plaster crumbles and the ceiling is weakened enough for the lamp to fall out of the ceiling.

Thanks for the reply.

What I should have said is

I already have 240v 50watt downlighters in a plasterboard ceiling and they get very hot and realise they would be a fire risk in lath and plaster as well as most probably unacceptable.

Would low voltage be acceptable?

They get hot too.
Cutting holes for them in a lath and plaster ceiling will have you screaming and ripping your hair out anyway.

if you really must have them, remove the sections of lath and plaster between joists where ever you want them, screw in p board in those sections and then skim over whole celing, then cut holes in those designated areas through the p board sections
