I live in a single story cottage with a mult-fuel burner with a unlined flue. Last winter I experienced a certain amount of blowback down the chimney and am trying to solve the problem. Does anyone out there know if lining the flue will help matters? I've been quoted £500 to install but don't want to spend that sort of money without success. If not any other suggestions? Thanks.

It sounds like you have more of a down draught problem really....I'd be investigating cowls for the chimney top.
John :)

Thanks John, I'll look into that. Do you happen to know if Spinner Cowls work? Jim.

It all depends on your particular situation Jim - but whatever happens, check that any cowl is good for solid fuel.
I've had a lot of success with Colt cowls, personally. Maybe a Hetas firm could advise you better.

Liner very likely to help due to increasing draw. Google Stove Fitter's Manual.

Single storey won't help because the flue is so short and you need to be achieving a tall narrow column of rising warm air. Similarly an old flue inside a stone or brick wall will be uneven and probably too big in cross-section to encourage a clean upwards flow of gases.

Lining will definitely help. make friends with a good, experienced chimney sweep; he will have seen the problem loads of times and will know how to resolve it.

Chimneys in one storey buildings are more prone to wind turbulence. Lining should help but will not necessarily cure the problem. Some factors should be considered such as the flue high (should be around 4.5m as a minimum), obstacles such as tall trees or buildings nearby, several bends in the flue, a flue too large, a partially blocked flue (too much soot, bird’s nest), air starvation or even an extractor fan drawing air from the chimney. The top of the chimney should also be above roof level.
A chimney sweep seems a good and cheaper option to give you some advice.
