Hello please be nice I am out of my comfort zone here

I have a potterton puma 80 boiler that is around 12 years old, we have had a British gas maintenance contract on it since we bought the house 10 years ago, we have had problems over the years but British gas have been able to fix, replace bits and keep it ticking over.

Today however it has finally died, the heat exchanger is dead and the part is no longer available, I am now in the market for a new combi bolier.

I know as much about boilers as I do about brain surgery, and I am not in the habit of buying anything without looking at the market, trouble is I don't know what I need to look at regarding changing the potterton. I know it's a combi boiler but there are loads on the market for various costs and I don't know what flow rate etc really means.

Can anyone tell me what would replace a potterton puma 80 bolier, for the record it's a 3 bedroom house, 8 radiators total in property, and 1 bathroom. The potterton has never left us short of either heat or hot water in all the years so am happy to replace a like for like. Don't want dirt cheap but also don't need gold plated bits inside it either.

A virtual pint to all who can point me in the right direction, one day virtual pints will become a good online currency.

Cheers Kevin

You get what you pay for, in a nut shell. Go cheap and have a short warranty (and prob more break downs) or pay more and get a longer one (with less breakdowns). When pricing factor in that you wouldn't need BG homecare cover during the warranty period and that saving could make all the differance to how much your prepared to pay

Is the heat exchanger leaking?

Apart from leaks then there is little to go wrong with them.

Any 24 kW combi will do the job but I would usually recommend a 28 kW to give a little power in hand for water heating in cold weather.

Should cost less than £2000 unless a lot of gas pipe upgrading is needed.

Tony just cannot help himself ;) I am surprised that he didn't suggest that someone may take pity and do it as a pro bono. :)
