Has anyone on here used the internet to find their family tree?

I googled Ancestry.co.uk but it cost money and being "An unemployed property magnate" I have to watch my pennies.

Are there any sites that are free?

I did and ancestry was the place to look, well worth it for a month subscription. Thee were a few free but not accurate or complete sites so you will need ancestry anyway.

I've never used these sites. What sort of information do you need to already know in order to find your ancestry.

I'd like to know before I spend any money. I'm a retired Yorkshireman, so I have to watch the pennies!

What's the English word for people from the Neander valley? If you put an 'h' in it it just shows your ignorance. Neandertal is the correct modern pronunciation.

In 1901 an orthographic reform in Germany changed the spelling of Thal (valley) to Tal. The scientific names like Homo neanderthalensis or Homo sapiens neanderthalensis for Neanderthal man are not affected by this change, because the laws of taxonomy retain the original spelling at the time of naming.

So it is still, Neanderthal Man

Modern usage is Neandertal. It's optional which you use. Get a fookin life.

My niece has done a bit of digging and informs me that on my maternal side the family was quite wealthy, apparently it was lost when my great great great whenever after getting a maid pregnant threw the baby on the fire and the judge did a swap, his estate, in Cornwall, for his life, hence I ended up penniless.
