Hi. I've never posted here before but I'm completely inexperienced so I'm hoping someone can help me.

I'm currently living in a rented flat with a half tiled bathroom. The shower head is above the tile line. The landlord or previous tenant had papered the wall years ago and painted over it a couple of times, but the paint on the paper was badly cracking and peeling so I've taken it off. The wall underneath is dry, but looks warped and is beginning to develop hairline cracks, which I suspect is the reason for the wallpaper.

I'm not sure what to do now, as I don't know what the wall is made of. I've read that you can't paint drywall behind a shower because of the water, so I'm not sure whether it's best to paper over it again with vinyl paper. I don't even know if it is normal drywall or plaster or if its bathroom safe (the house was built in the late 60's).

Obviously as it's rented, I'm not prepared to get specialists in to tile the whole wall or replaster it, and I highly doubt the landlord will do anything if I ask him to do it. We also don't have an extractor fan, which I'm guessing is the cause of the problems to begin with. Any advice on the best way to proceed would be great!

This sounds more of a legal issue than a DIY one. I'm sure this is your landlords responsibility, although u may have rocked the boat a little by taking the wallpaper off.

If you do do it yourself and you're after cheap and cheerful compared to tiles you could try?

white plastic sheet (perspex?). Travelodge use it all the time. I hate it but it would keep the walls dry and not affect your substrate which could be an argument from your landlord later on.

Alternatively, what about a shower curtain?
