After some cost guidance, not something I've really bothered with before.

I took a 3P motor to be looked at as it was leaking oil from the gearbox and the guy has quoted me £295+Vat for new bearings, a new seal and a rewind.

I don't have the specs of the motor to hand, I thought I'd taken a photo of the rating plate before I took it in but it seems I didn't.

How reasonable does this sound? A new motor+gearbox is circa £1200 so it's definitely cheaper than replacing, but if this guy is a rip off, I will look elsewhere.

What do you guys that get motors rewound usually pay?

that's all that was visibly wrong with the motor when I took it in. The motor was fully functional and fairly quiet operating

But the guy's telling me a bearing's failed and it could do with a rewind.

I'm inclined to take it elsewhere for another quote, but don't want to look stupid if he's a lot cheaper than the second quote and have to take it back

There comes a point where one has to trust the re-wind guy even if he is wrong some times.

I would not normally send a motor for repair to change seals and bearing unless to original manufacturer. With a SWF motor with gearbox, break, inverter, and ASii built in I would return to manufacturer for repair but simple gear box and bearing I would be looking at repairing myself.

If I then found damage to the stator which would likely have compromised the winding then I would have sent for a re-wind or if the insulation resistance readings were bad then maybe re-wind and bearing together.

Smaller motors I have found with the government incentives to use more economic types were just not worth re-winding it was around the 10hp before re-wind was the way to go.

£295+Vat for new bearings, a new seal and a rewind seems to me quite cheap it was rare to have a motor re-wound for under £200 below that normally new motor.

Assuming you did an insulation test before it left you then he must have stripped the motor to realise a re-wind was required so now a little late to take it else where anyway.

These days, with the ready availability of cheap imports, it's unusual to find it economic to rewind small motors unless it's non-standard or special in some way. Having said that, there's still a rewind shop down in town here - only one in the area that I know of !
Never had one done, but TBH what you've been quoted doesn't sound like a lot to me.

its not a huge motor, not small, but also not huge. And I don't think the motor itself is particularly specialised, but the gearbox and coupling on the end of it definitely is. Much simpler to get it rewound & repaired than to futz around trying to source a suitable replacement, which probably wouldn't work out any cheaper than the repair. Like I say, it's £300 vs £1200 so no contest really.
