Lock up your letterboxes
Whether you're expecting valuables or an important letter in the post, seeing it go missing is incredibly frustrating. Without a secure letterbox, items can vanish even once they've been delivered.
It's not just the odd valuable or some cash stuffed in a birthday card that you need to worry about. With identity theft such a problem, it is vital people stay clued up about how to protect sensitive personal information getting into the wrong hands.
For anyone living in flats or apartment complexes, security is an added concern. Your post doesn't come through your door, meaning it's vital to have somewhere safe for it go until you can collect it. Secure multi-occupancy letterboxes are just the ticket.
Of course if you have an item that needs to be signed for this will be delivered to the door to obtain the signature rather than left at the central point. But for everything else you'll be relying on the multi-occupancy letterbox.
Tips for keeping post safe
First of all, collect your mail regularly. If items are piling up thieves may notice.
Ensure it is securely locked - it is worth spending more on a good quality lock. A cylinder lock is a good bet.
Use email if you can for important financial information – going paperless is easy these days.
If someone is sending valuables, money or jewellery, ask them to use Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed, which offers compensation for any loss or damage. The postman will also need a signature, so it'll come to your door.
Money should be packaged securely and should not be visible from the outside. Do not indicate anywhere on the packaging that money is enclosed.
If you're going on holiday, ask a trusted neighbour or friend to check your mailbox regularly for you so letters don't start piling up.

All I get is junk mail anyhow so they are welcome to it........ come to think of it if they stole my credit card they will do me a favour because they probably will spend less than the missus

not really :) I noticed that there is nothing dedicated to this subject, yes I'm more than happy to share my experience as a supplier but I'm also hoping there will be fair number of people with questions and suggestions about this subject.

Magic letterbox with shredder is the answer, recognizing spam and junk and recycling it as it comes through the door

Or get a dog. That will stop pesky people putting stuff through your door, the postman included.

Ma dug will eat anything that comes through the letterbocks. Don't mind when it's a tax demand or gas bill, but he ate ma birthday cards.

You didn't really state anything that is earth shattering. What next, advice about pickpockets?

I'm always getting 'signed for' mail pushed through my letterbox. No-one ever asks me to sign for them!

It occurs to me that someone, somewhere is paying extra for a 'signed for' service that doesn't really exist.

I sometimes consider taking in something valuable that has been posted as 'signed for' and then claiming that it was never delivered. There would be no signature and therefore no proof that it was ever delivered. ;)

Surely if I securely lock my letter box, all my post will be left outside my front door, alerting thieves to the fact that I am out.

I have perused the idea before of building a lockable parcel type box where the lid is lifted, parcel placed in then somehow it gets moved to secure storage when the lid is closed.

twas an idea only lol

However more & more required these days given that we get a lot delivered via the web.

A coded lock would be good. You reset the code each time you are expecting a parcel and online order forms could have a 'lock code' box in which you type the number. That number is then passed on to the delivery driver.
