Dear DIYers.

First post here, so please bear with me! We are buying a property that needs a few things doing in the plumbing/heating department. I am trying to get an idea of whether the combination of ideas and fixes that I have in mind will all work together.

Firstly, the house is not on mains gas. Currently is has electric night storage heaters which are old and quite bulky. Hot water is served by a hot water cylinder on ground floor.

I think the property is suitable for a ground source heat pump (big garden, and it will be well insulated) and underfloor heating. It seems a good time given gov’t grants. I would probably keep the existing electric hot water system, at least for the time being. There is a multi-fuel burner in the living room.

There is a water tank in the loft that has leaked in the past.

So, can I get rid of the water tank, and if so, what would I replace it with, given some of the above choices? I had hoped to install a water pump and a whole house water filter. Will the pump mean I don’t need a water tank in the loft? Will a filter sap the extra pressure to some extent (I think I need a buffer tank, though not sure). Should i consider megaflo or thermal stores as part of the system?

Grateful for any pointers!

Have a look at air source. A lot less upheaval than ground source. This could be fitted with a megaflow and a sealed wet system. An immersion would be used to top up HW. Get as much info as possible, and a good firm to fit it.

Looking at gov't subsidies, we thought the GSHP would be the way to go. Would either work with your suggestion just as well? And does the megaflow mean i can chuck the tank?
