Dishwasher drains back after use

I have a Kenmore dishwasher about 10 years old.

After the cycle completes, it empties fine, but after some time water seeps back into the dishwasher filling the bottom. The hose is secured high under the counter so I don't think the problem is there.

Is there a valve or something which could be defective, and where or how do I find it?

Thanks in advance.

If it's clean water then the inlet valve isn't closing properly.
If it's dirty water check that the drain hose isn't too far into the standpipe or that the sink drain isn't blocked and that the hose is higher than the overflow of the sink.

Unplug your appliance before working on it
