Vent in bedroom making bedroom cold

Hi all.

I've just moved into a new house (renting), which has two chimney breasts, one for the front rooms and one for the back rooms. They have both been blocked up, one with some kind of designer fire thing (is it a fire? I have no idea) and one just totally blocked up. The blocked up one has a vent downstairs where the fire would have been. But the other one has the vent in the upstairs bedroom, high up on the wall near the ceiling. Unfortunately, the vent is making the room very cold, as cold air is just cascading out of it and on to the bed below. Do I have any options RE covering it?

Do the windows have trickle vents?

They were fitted for when the fires were live but they may are likely also providing some background ventilation for the rooms. If you do not have trickle vents in the windows then blocking them up may well cause condensation to occur on the windows or walls and if I was your landlord I would expect you to pay for the cost of any repairs that were necessary at the end of your tenancy should any damage be sustained because of this. You could block them temporarily and see if you get any issues with condensation. Use some duct tape or similar.

each fire has its own flue unconnected to any other

Should be at low level to keep cavity dry and ventilated, often fitted in skirting on unused fireplaces.

Would it be fair to say that this vent, which is right next to the ceiling on the first floor, is probably only ventilating the bit of the chimney that passes through the loft anyway?

Block it off with a sheet of paper and masking tape mate - you can always open it up again when its warmer!
