Would a group of householders, say 1000, getting together to buy energy from a supplier have any effect on the suppliers?

How do you think the suppliers would feel if a group of a thousand householders wanted to switch suppliers?

Are there any groups working like this?

I belong to a Group that purchases Oil for Central Heating, it makes a considerable saving, Prices are less than I was paying myself over two years ago.

The same group got a "Council grant"in April this Year to organise Energy and Gas supplies to customers they hired an advisory firm to help customers, it turned out it was a bit of a "con" this firm was the organisation that posted Information on the Web about differences in energy suppliers and how to change, this firm did the paperwork which did help a lot of people that did not understand the procedure,
the problem is that there are so many different Tariffs and people get "bogged down"with the paperwork which benefits the Energy Suppliers.

most people were disappointed it was not on the same principle as the oil supply but joined anyway, so there is a possible saving there, we will have to see over this winter if we were told the right supplier.

But my opinion is that the smaller energy companies will be wiped out over the next couple of years leaving the main six Companies, similar to the Telephone Companies that started up ten years or so ago with cheap telephone accounts (What happened to Mercury Telephone Service ?)

Everyone should get together and choose one supplier, eg British Gas

We then all switch to them, leaving the other big 5 suppliers to panic!

Wow! That puts things into perspective. I remember we originally signed up for a cable telephone service with NYNEX, which later became NTL and even later Virgin. In fact, I think one of our junction boxes still has the word NYNEX stamped on it.

I had no idea we'd been with them that long. They should be offering us all sorts of loyalty bonuses.

I might write to them. :)

all you get for a loyalty bonus is to pay the maximum/highest charges they have
same with banks/insurance /power providers they love apathy as they just keep upping the price

My idea was to have a register of say 5000+ customers who give permission to one person to be able to switch their supplier.

I would expect the suppler to cough a bit because the change-over would be expensive, disruptive and they would have a sudden loss of revenue.

The more on this system, say a whole town, would be playing them at there own game. Because as individuals we do not switch enough. 10% I hear, is not powerful enough to mean anything.

What do you reckon?
